Angel’s Egg is an animated film written, directed, and conceived by Mamoru Oshii (Ghost in the Shell) with original concept and art direction by Yoshitaka Amano (Final Fantasy series). Originally released in 1985 as an OVA (original video animation), the film has since gained worldwide recognition as a unique and iconic work. Created in the early days of their careers, this collaboration between two of Japan’s most celebrated creators became a cult classic, known for its haunting visuals and peerless, enigmatic worldbuilding. It is now regarded as a legendary piece in the history of animation, celebrated both as a cinematic and artistic masterpiece.
To commemorate the film’s 40th anniversary, a fully restored 4K version is set for worldwide release in 2025. Overseen by director Mamoru Oshii himself, the original 35mm negatives were scanned and restored using the latest technology.
The audio was remixed into both 5.1ch surround and Dolby Atmos, following the separation of dialogue, sound effects, and music from the original mono track. This complex audio restoration was made possible through the collaboration of Sony PCL Inc., which employed its immersive sound production technology and proprietary audio source separation techniques, developed using AI by Sony Group Corporation, to isolate and enhance each component of the original audio.
News of the 4K restoration’s production, announced this May, made headlines not only in Japan but also among anime fans around the world. Shortly after the announcement, France-based Goodfellas Animation, a branch of Goodfellas known for distributing many Studio Ghibli titles, acquired the global sales rights. Most recently, it was revealed that North American distribution will be handled by GKIDS Films, which recently made waves with its acquisition by TOHO.
